about the artisan
Ms.Tina has taught herself the long-ago tradition of barkcloth. Once only available to the royals of Uganda, barkcloth is culturally valued and adored because of its history and has found a new place with both its products and storytelling. Bark is sustainably and carefully harvested from the inner-layer of the Mutuba Tree, also known as Barkcloth Fig, in a process that has changed very little through the generations. The bark is removed, soaked in water dried and then beaten until it reaches its soft, fabric-like texture. The tree is then wrapped and cared for, for its regrowth process. Uganda remains one of the few countries within the continent to keep the barkcloth tradition alive.
Testimonials
One little world fair trade is amazing, I absolutely love everything in this store. It's my go to for gifts and extra nice things for my home. Kudos to Jodie and her team/family for creating such a warm, thoughtful and positive presence in our neighborhood. I learn something new every time I go and I can't wait to attend some of the live workshops!
I've bought a few things from One Little World that are used and enjoyed regularly in my home (exp: felt mistletoe decoration, dryer ball). Both are still in very good condition even after years of use. I also appreciate having this option to support more civil and dignified working conditions for people who create these products.
